Is 5G home broadband any good in 2026? An honest guide

5G home broadband is the most oversold and most underrated product in UK broadband — at the same time. Oversold, because "up to 1 Gbps" adverts describe lab conditions you will never see through your living-room wall. Underrated, because for the ~4 in 10 UK homes still stuck on FTTC copper (30–80 Mbps), a £20–30/month 5G router is often a genuine 3–5× speed upgrade available today, with no engineer visit and no landline.
What speeds you'll actually get
The honest answer is a range, and the range depends on three things: whether your area has 5G+ (standalone 5G on band n78) or just "5G" bolted onto 4G; how far you are from the mast; and — the one everyone forgets — your walls. Mid-band 5G loses a large fraction of its strength passing through brick and almost all of it through foil-backed insulation and low-E glass. That is why our estimator quotes indoor and outdoor speeds separately: outdoors you might see 200–500 Mbps, and the router on your windowsill might deliver 100–250 Mbps. Both numbers are true. Only one of them is your Netflix.
Rules of thumb from measured UK data: EE is fastest where its 5G+ is deployed; Three holds the most mid-band spectrum and posts strong peaks but patchier consistency; Vodafone is solid in urban areas; O2 trails on average speed. All four vary street by street — check your postcode, not the national league table.
The two catches nobody puts in the adverts
Evening congestion. A mast is shared. At 9pm in a dense area your 200 Mbps can become 80. Fibre doesn't do this. If your household's peak use is 8–11pm streaming in 4K on three screens, weight our estimates toward their lower bounds.
CGNAT. Most 5G broadband shares public IP addresses between customers. You won't notice — until you try port forwarding, hosting a game server, or certain VPN and CCTV setups. Gamers and self-hosters: EE sells a static IP add-on; with Three and Vodafone, assume CGNAT.
Who should switch (and who shouldn't)
Switch if: you're on FTTC with no full-fibre availability (check with our fibre vs 5G comparison), you rent and can't get lines installed, you want broadband this week, or you need a portable/short-contract option. Don't switch if: full fibre is available at your address — it's usually similar money for a better product — or your area shows weak indoor 5G on every network. And whatever the checkers say, use the trial window: every major provider offers 14–30 days. Two weeks of the router on your windowsill is worth a thousand coverage maps, ours included.
